Its history, its peculiar properties, and the way it is finally abandoned reveal the dangers of a purity that cannot recognize its own shadow.

Origin and Appearance

The dagger was whittled during a single summer of childhood play by Maxim's best and only friend, Petka, when both boys were twelve years old. They were playing at knights in battle, and Petka, who was slightly younger and idolized Maxim, handed him the dagger after being disarmed, declaring that a valiant knight must take his life with this weapon rather than suffer the humiliation of capture. Maxim accepted it as a trophy and a gift, but felt a strange shame and never used it in their games again. He kept it at home, hidden in a drawer with sentimental keepsakes, until the day he first sensed the presence of Darkness in the world. At that moment, the wooden dagger seemed to summon him, and it proved to be a genuine weapon—pitiless, merciless, and invincible. The dagger is described as long and narrow, made of wood that had once been light-colored but had become darker over three years, gradually stained by its use. Maxim himself refers to it by the high-flown name "misericord," a term for a mercy-blade used to deliver a death stroke to a wounded knight.

Unique Lethal Properties

The dagger possesses extraordinary and highly specific powers. It kills Dark Ones instantly, and its victims die without any visible wound on their bodies—only a cut in their clothing marks the blow. When Maxim kills the were-panther Galina Rogova, the wooden blade slides into her chest and pierces her heart, yet after her rapid transformation from animal back to human, there is no wound left on the body; the brief moment of transfiguration has purged her and made her whole. The same signature—a torn collar or blouse with no corresponding injury—appears on every victim, including the Dark Magician killed in the restaurant restroom. The dagger is also a weapon of Darkness, not of Light. Maxim himself does not understand this; he believes he is a knight of the Light fighting Evil. But when he stabs Anton with it, Anton survives because the weapon is good only against Darkness. "I don't know who gave it to you," Anton tells him, "but it's a weapon of Darkness. Against me it's just a sliver of wood." The dagger thus embodies a terrible irony: the man who believes he is the purest champion of Good wields a tool that belongs to the very Evil he fights.

Role in the Maverick's Campaign

For three and a half years, the wooden dagger is the sole instrument of Maxim's solitary war. He uses it to kill Dark Ones of low to moderate power—shape-shifters, magicians, and potential Others—whom he can sense through a unique ability to perceive patches of Darkness in people's souls. The dagger never fails him, and he never hesitates, because he believes he is the only one in the world who can tell the Dark Ones apart from ordinary people, the only one who has been given a weapon by God, by destiny, or by chance. The killings follow a pattern: Maxim lies in wait, confronts his victim, pronounces himself "the judge," and drives the wooden blade home. The victims die instantly, and the dagger leaves no forensic evidence beyond the slit in their clothing. This pattern allows the Day Watch to manipulate events, sacrificing their own expendable members to frame Anton for the murders. The dagger is thus not merely a weapon but the central piece in a complex provocation designed to destroy a Light Magician and test a future Great Sorceress.

Abandonment and Aftermath

The dagger's power is broken not by a stronger weapon but by a confrontation with the truth. When Maxim faces Anton and the boy Egor on the night of the climactic showdown, he is forced to see that his absolute certainty is flawed. Anton tells him that the dagger is a weapon of Darkness, and that Maxim himself, for all his purity, has sown as much evil as a dozen werewolves or vampires. When the head of the Night Watch, Gesar, appears and commands Maxim to drop the dagger, Maxim flings it to the ground as if it were burning his fingers. The gesture marks the end of his solitary war and his transformation into an Inquisitor—a figure set above both Light and Darkness, whose role is not to kill but to judge. The wooden dagger, once a symbol of childhood friendship and righteous fury, is abandoned on the asphalt, its work done and its wielder finally understanding that the line between Good and Evil is not as simple as a blade's edge.
